Agreement to terms
These Terms of Service ("Terms") govern your access to and use of Budget Before Broke (the "Service") operated by Budget Before Broke. By creating an account, signing in, or using the Service, you agree to these Terms and our Privacy Policy.
This document is provided for informational purposes and does not constitute legal advice.
Eligibility
You must be at least 18 years old (or the age of majority where you live) and able to form a binding contract to use the Service. You are responsible for the accuracy of information you provide and for maintaining the security of your sign-in credentials.
Accounts and households
The Service is organized around households (shared workspaces). You may belong to multiple households; each household has its own budget data and subscription.
Household owners and admins can invite others by email. Read-only members may view shared household data but cannot make most changes. You are responsible for who you invite and what they can access.
You may not use another person’s account without permission or misrepresent your identity when accepting an invitation.
Subscriptions, trial, and billing
The Service offers a 30-day free trial per user account. You do not need a credit card to start a trial. Trial eligibility is tied to your user account — creating additional households does not reset the trial.
After the trial, continued full access (including unlimited synced bank accounts) requires a paid subscription: $12.99 per month or $89.99 per year, plus applicable taxes. Current pricing is also shown on our pricing page.
Payments are processed by Stripe. By subscribing, you authorize us and Stripe to charge your payment method on a recurring basis until you cancel.
If you do not subscribe before your trial ends, the Service may switch to read-only mode. Your data remains stored until you delete the household or request account deletion as described in our Privacy Policy.
If a renewal payment fails, you may retain edit access until the end of the current paid billing period shown in the app; after that, the Service may become read-only until payment is updated through the billing portal.
You may cancel renewal at any time through the Stripe customer billing portal or in-app billing settings. Cancellation typically takes effect at the end of the current billing period unless otherwise stated at checkout.
Deleting a household cancels that household’s subscription immediately as part of the deletion process.
Bank connections (Plaid)
Linking a bank account is optional. When you connect a bank, you authorize Plaid to access account and transaction data on our behalf. Your bank login credentials are provided directly to Plaid and are not stored by us.
During a free trial, you may sync one Plaid-linked account per household. Subscribers may connect unlimited synced accounts subject to technical and institutional limits.
You are responsible for maintaining valid bank credentials and reconnecting when prompted. Disconnecting a bank or deleting a household revokes our access through Plaid.
Acceptable use
You agree not to:
- Use the Service for unlawful purposes or to violate others’ rights.
- Attempt to gain unauthorized access to the Service, other accounts, or our infrastructure.
- Reverse engineer, scrape, or overload the Service except as permitted by law.
- Upload malware or interfere with the Service’s operation.
- Use the Service to provide regulated financial advice to third parties without appropriate licenses.
Not financial advice
Budget Before Broke is a personal budgeting and planning tool. It does not provide financial, tax, investment, or legal advice. Projections, debt payoff comparisons, and budget summaries are estimates based on data you provide or sync. You are solely responsible for financial decisions. Consult qualified professionals before making significant financial choices.
Intellectual property
We own the Service, including software, branding, and content we provide. You retain ownership of data you submit. You grant us a limited license to host, process, and display your data solely to provide the Service.
Disclaimers
THE SERVICE IS PROVIDED "AS IS" AND "AS AVAILABLE" WITHOUT WARRANTIES OF ANY KIND, WHETHER EXPRESS OR IMPLIED, INCLUDING IMPLIED WARRANTIES OF MERCHANTABILITY, FITNESS FOR A PARTICULAR PURPOSE, AND NON-INFRINGEMENT. WE DO NOT WARRANT THAT THE SERVICE WILL BE UNINTERRUPTED, ERROR-FREE, OR THAT BANK DATA WILL ALWAYS BE COMPLETE OR CURRENT.
Limitation of liability
TO THE MAXIMUM EXTENT PERMITTED BY LAW, BUDGET BEFORE BROKE AND ITS SUPPLIERS WILL NOT BE LIABLE FOR ANY INDIRECT, INCIDENTAL, SPECIAL, CONSEQUENTIAL, OR PUNITIVE DAMAGES, OR ANY LOSS OF PROFITS, DATA, OR GOODWILL, ARISING FROM YOUR USE OF THE SERVICE.
OUR TOTAL LIABILITY FOR ANY CLAIM ARISING OUT OF THESE TERMS OR THE SERVICE WILL NOT EXCEED THE GREATER OF (A) THE AMOUNT YOU PAID US IN THE TWELVE MONTHS BEFORE THE CLAIM OR (B) ONE HUNDRED U.S. DOLLARS ($100).
Some jurisdictions do not allow certain limitations; in those cases, our liability is limited to the fullest extent permitted by law.
Indemnification
You agree to indemnify and hold us harmless from claims arising out of your misuse of the Service, violation of these Terms, or infringement of others’ rights, except to the extent caused by our negligence or willful misconduct.
Termination
You may stop using the Service at any time. We may suspend or terminate access if you materially breach these Terms or if required by law. Provisions that by their nature should survive (including disclaimers, limitations of liability, and governing law) will survive termination.
Governing law and disputes
These Terms are governed by the laws of the State of Delaware, United States, without regard to conflict-of-law rules. Except where prohibited, exclusive jurisdiction for disputes relating to these Terms lies in the state and federal courts located in Delaware, and you consent to personal jurisdiction there.
Changes to these Terms
We may update these Terms from time to time. We will post the updated Terms on this page and update the “Last updated” date. Continued use after changes become effective constitutes acceptance of the revised Terms.
